Penfolds Grange, Bin 707, RWT, Magill Estate,
St Henri and Yattarna
Penfolds has been producing remarkable wines for almost 150 years
and indisputably lead the development of Australian fine wine in the
modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange Hermitage in 1951
forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine, since then a
series of standout wines - both red and white - have been released
under the Penfolds masthead.
PENFOLDS
LUXURY
& ICON WINE -
2010 Release.
We are delighted to announce the
2010 release of the Penfolds Luxury and Icon portfolio and the
imminent arrival of Penfolds Grange 2005.
Peter Gago, chief winemaker says: “A small 2005 vintage Grange
make – understandably no quality compromise”
Rarity may be a constant theme this year. Alongside the 2005
Penfolds Grange, we are releasing Penfolds Bin 707, Penfolds RWT,
Penfolds Magill Estate and the Penfolds Yattarna from the 2007
vintage. Our winemaking team described the 2007 vintage as ‘dry and
challenging, testing everyone’s patience and skill’. This was
reflected in fruit yields and again, in order to maintain the high
levels of quality expected of the Luxury and Icon portfolio, volume
was sacrificed without compromising on quality.
This years release of Penfolds St Henri is a special one. Following
on from the superb 2005 St Henri the 2006 will be the 50th
commercial vintage and will continue to enhance its reputation as
the alter-ego of Grange.
Finally, completing the line-up, is Penfolds Bin 08A Chardonnay.
2008 may prove to be a stunning vintage for many of the Penfolds
whites. This release of Bin 08A is aromatically defined, with a
beautifully integrated acidity – courtesy of grapes harvested before
the onset of an unusual heatwave.
As always, we expect demand to exceed our ability to supply these
limited edition wines and all the wines are therefore highly
allocated. Please understand that our winemakers’ unwavering
commitment to quality limits the quantity of wines made in any given
vintage.

Penfolds GRANGE
2005
£
case of six inc Vat
Australia's most
iconic red wine.
Grange is arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed
as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of
vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy
between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Penfolds
Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz
grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique
Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of
the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most
powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending
philosophy.
"A small 2005 vintage Grange make - understandably no quality
compromise. With its DNA at 88% Barossa, this Grange belies most 2005
vintage-chart implications."

Penfolds BIN 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Sold Out
The Cabernet
Sauvignon Grange equivalent. Bin 707 is Penfolds'
Cabernet Sauvignon version of Grange: ripe, intensely-flavoured
fruit; completing fermentation and maturation in new American oak;
fully expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard,
multi-region fruit sourcing. Named by an ex-Qantas marketer, Bin 707
was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975
when fruit was directed to other wines, nor in 1981, 1995, 2000 or
2003 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not
available). Fullbodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707
has a secure place among the ranks of Australia's finest Cabernets.
"Twenty vintages after winning the inaugural Adelaide Trophy with
the 1987 Bin 707, this new 2007 Bin 707 release continues to
demonstrate the advantage & wisdom of multi-regional blending in
difficult years. Boldly Bin 707. Unmistakable!" Peter Gago -

Penfolds RWT Shiraz2007
£
case of six inc Vat
Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the
multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are
hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa
Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for
'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internally
when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a
'Trial' ! RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage.
Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is
more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily
selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than
sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps
to redefine
Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.
"Now into its second decade of release, the 2007 vintage excels.
It encapsulates what is now the RWT style... defined with its own
personality and style territory."

Penfolds MAGILL Estate 2007
£
case of six inc Vat
The single vineyard Magill Estate Shiraz is intrinsically linked to
Penfolds' beginnings. Sourced from the original Magill vineyard (5.2 ha)
on the edge of Adelaide's eastern suburbs (just eight kilometres from
the city's CBD), fruit is crushed, fermented and matured on-site at the
original Penfolds Magill winery, established in 1844. First produced in
1983, Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz is an elegant, medium-weight style
with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both French and
American oak. It is a sleek, contemporary wine, yet crafted in the old
fashioned way in the 120+ year-old winery: hand-picked, vinified in open
fermenters and then basket pressed. Careful vineyard management
(sacrificial canes, fruit thinning, relegation), batching and subsequent
separation of ferments delivers welcome dividends.
"Continues the evolution of the modern style of Magill Estate Shiraz
- always sympathetic to its unique terroir !"

Penfolds St HENRI Shiraz
2006 £case of six inc Vat
Shiraz, with a
tiny proportion of Cabernet.
Penfolds St Henri is a highly successful and alternative expression
of Shiraz and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual
among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any
new oak. It was created in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage
1957) and gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and
distinctive style became better understood. St Henri is rich and
plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it
ages. It is matured in old, 1460-litre vats that allow the wine to
develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small
proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the
focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.
"This 50th commercial release of St Henri continues to enhance
its reputation as the alter-ego of Grange! Built to age - needs
time. Be patient - the churlish might imply that it's too early to
call... However!"

Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay
(Screw Cap)
2007
£
case of six inc Vat
Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay
is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focussed and highly
publicised wine development projects ever
conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind
across generations of Penfolds winemaking inspired the winery to
embark on a program to create a white wine that would one day
rival the standards of Penfolds Grange. Selectively sourcing only
the very best Chardonnay fruit from cool-climate regions, coupled
with sensitive and enlightened winemaking, the style continues to
evolve. Yattarna reflects Penfolds' patience and continued commitment to its
original goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal
language, meaning 'little by little, gradually'. Each vintage
provides the opportunity to further raise the quality bar.
"Definitively Yattarna: brooding restraint awaiting
release...soon to be unleashed!"

Reserve Bin A Chardonnay 2008
£
case of six inc Vat
Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay has evolved into a wine that is now
a distinctive, single-region style in its own right, with a contemporary
and distinctive Chardonnay persona. All fruit is hand-picked into small
bins and then whole-bunch pressed. The juice is incrementally filled to
barrique directly from the press, and allowed to undergo a natural
fermentation, sans inoculation. Every barrique is its own unique
225-litre ferment. Enhanced mouthfeel and complexities are achieved by
fermenting on full solids, using a selective mix of new & aged French
oak. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation (all natural), and
is bottled unfiltered.
"This wine certainly makes a statement and
looks very much like one of the best releases since 1994.
Pinnacle Bin A Chardonnay!"

Penfolds Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir
2005
The tradition of
innovation and experimentation is central to the
philosophy of the limited production PENFOLDS Cellar
Reserve wines. Until now only available
through PENFOLDS Cellar Doors and the Magill Estate
Restaurant, these are effectively experimental wines.
The Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir is an ongoing project.
The fruit derives primarily from the Adelaide Hills and
the wine is hand-made by Peter Gago at the Magill Estate
Winery.
Here is a great review of the wine by Matthew Dukes:
'2005 Penfold's
Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir - Penfold's cracked the codes
of Shiraz and Cabernet many decades ago, but until now
the illusive Pinot Noir grape has been just out of their
reach. This 2005 Adelaide Hills Pinot is the turning
point and it is a delightful, layered, accurate wine.
Masculine and still youthful there is an energy and
attack on the palate reminiscent of ripe, textured
Morey-Saint-Denis and the wild aromas are heavenly
already. With four or five years ahead of it this is a
bold Pinot with character and charm in equal measure.'
Robert Parker 89,
Drink: 2006 – 2012 There are some terrific red wine
bargains in Penfolds’ portfolio. The 2005 Pinot Noir
Cellar Reserve (all from Adelaide Hills) displays an
authentic Pinot Noir character in its bouquet of sweet
and sour cherries, dried herbs, forest floor, and nicely
integrated wood as well as acidity. Bottled unfined and
unfiltered after spending nine months in equal parts new
and old French barriques, it possesses a beautiful
texture, surprising weight, and a European sensibility.
This beauty demonstrates how far this estate’s
winemaking team has progressed in making high class
Pinot. It should drink well for 5-6 years.
